On 8 September 2026, OpenAI announced that a swarm of about 10,000 agents had produced a 166-page proof for the Navier–Stokes existence and smoothness problem in 88 hours, checked in Lean. Within a day, Tristan Buckmaster of NYU and Levent Alpöge of Anthropic, who had been attacking the same forced variant and feeding their unpublished drafts into private Codex sessions, asked whether their work had reached the model; Buckmaster was careful to say he was accusing no one, and OpenAI said it could not rule it out. The Clay Mathematics Institute opened its multi-year review. The result stands, the process was closed, and the question of who contributed what may never be settled.
